DESCRIPTION
Before diving into AWS services, you need to understand the rules of the game. The SAA-C03 exam is not a test of documentation knowledge. It is a test of your ability to choose the right architecture for a given scenario. Knowing the exam format in advance will spare you unpleasant surprises on exam day and help you manage your time and energy effectively.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
How many questions are on the exam and how much time is allowed
What types of questions appear and how they differ
What the passing score is and how points are calculated
What domains the exam covers and how much each one weighs
How much the exam costs and where you can take it
What is allowed and what is prohibited during the exam
EXAM OVERVIEW
Exam code: SAA-C03
Level: Associate
Duration: 130 minutes
Number of questions: 65
Passing score: 720 out of 1000
Cost: $300 USD
Language: English (translations available in Japanese, Korean, Chinese, and other languages, but the English version is the primary one)
Format: Pearson VUE — online or at a testing center
QUESTION TYPES
The exam contains two types of questions.
Multiple Choice (one correct answer) — the classic format. Four answer options, one correct. If you are unsure, the process of elimination helps remove obviously wrong options and improve your odds.
Multiple Response (multiple correct answers) — the question explicitly states how many answers to select, for example “choose 2” or “choose 3”. Partial credit is not awarded: you must select all correct options, otherwise the question is marked incorrect. These questions make up approximately 15–20% of the exam.
The exam also contains unscored questions — roughly 15 out of 65. AWS uses them to test new items. You will not know which questions are unscored, so treat every question with equal seriousness.
EXAM DOMAINS
The exam is divided into 4 domains. Each domain represents a knowledge area worth a specific percentage of your final score.
Domain Weight
----------------------------------------------------------
Domain 1: Design Secure Architectures 30%
Domain 2: Design Resilient Architectures 26%
Domain 3: Design High-Performing Architectures 24%
Domain 4: Design Cost-Optimized Architectures 20%
Domain 1 (Secure Architectures) carries the highest weight — 30%. This covers IAM, encryption, VPC, and data protection. If your knowledge of AWS security is weak, the exam will be challenging.
Domain 2 (Resilient Architectures) — fault tolerance, Multi-AZ, Multi-Region, Auto Scaling, backup and recovery. 26% of the final score.
Domain 3 (High-Performing Architectures) — performance, choosing the right EC2 instance type, databases, caching, CDN. 24%.
Domain 4 (Cost-Optimized Architectures) — cost reduction, Spot Instances, Savings Plans, choosing the right storage class. 20%.
HOW THE SCORE IS CALCULATED
AWS uses a scale from 100 to 1000. The passing score is 720. This roughly corresponds to 72% correct answers, but the exact calculation is more complex: AWS applies a scaling procedure where harder questions may be worth more than easier ones. Do not try to calculate “how many questions I can afford to miss” — simply answer as many questions correctly as possible.
There is no penalty for wrong answers. Never leave a question blank — guessing is always better than skipping.
WHERE AND HOW TO TAKE THE EXAM
The exam is administered through the Pearson VUE platform in two ways:
At a testing center — you go to an accredited center, leave your personal belongings, and sit at a computer. A live proctor is present. This is the most reliable option if you have unstable internet at home.
Online (OnVUE) — you take the exam from home or an office using the OnVUE application. A proctor monitors you remotely via camera. Requirements: a quiet, isolated room, stable internet connection, a clear desk, and no other people present. You may not stand up, speak aloud, or look away from the screen.
You can register for the exam at aws.amazon.com/certification or directly at pearsonvue.com/aws.
ESL ACCOMMODATION — EXTRA TIME
If English is not your native language, AWS provides free additional time — 30 minutes on top of the standard 130. That gives you 160 minutes total. This is an official program called ESL +30 (English as a Second Language Accommodation).
To receive the extra time, you must submit a request when registering for the exam — through your AWS Certification Account in the Accommodation Request section. This must be done before paying and booking a specific date. Once you have registered, the accommodation can no longer be added.
Most candidates from non-English-speaking countries are eligible for this benefit. 30 minutes is significant, especially when working through long scenario-based questions. Do not overlook this opportunity.
TIME MANAGEMENT
130 minutes for 65 questions is exactly 2 minutes per question. That sounds like plenty, but time passes quickly — especially on long scenario questions with extensive context.
The recommended strategy: read the question, know the answer — answer immediately. Unsure or doubtful — flag it (the Flag button in the exam interface) and move on. After the first pass, return to flagged questions with whatever time remains.
Never spend more than 2–3 minutes on a single question. One skipped question is not worth failing to answer the next five.
WHAT IS ALLOWED DURING THE EXAM
During the exam you are allowed to:
– Use the built-in flag feature to mark questions for review
– Skip questions and return to them later
– Use a virtual whiteboard (online) or physical scratch paper (testing center)
The following are prohibited:
– Any external materials, books, or notes
– Mobile phones and headphones
– Talking to or consulting with anyone
WHERE TO PRACTICE BEFORE THE EXAM
The exam itself is taken under strict supervision, but practice is completely open — just open a browser and train as much as you like.
AWS Skill Builder — Amazon’s official preparation platform. Free practice tests and learning materials are available. Address: skillbuilder.aws. The official SAA-C03 practice exam costs $40 but gives a realistic sense of the question style.
Tutorials Dojo — one of the best third-party resources. Over 500 questions with detailed explanations for each answer. Many candidates find it harder than the real exam — which works in your favor.
Whizlabs — a large bank of practice questions with explanations. Available in both study mode and exam simulation mode.
ExamTopics — a free resource with community-contributed real exam questions. Useful for understanding trends, but explanations can be inaccurate — always verify against official AWS documentation.
Official AWS Documentation and FAQs — for in-depth study of specific services. The FAQ pages for S3, EC2, RDS, and VPC are especially valuable — many exam questions are drawn directly from them.
IMPORTANT TO KNOW
If you do not pass on the first attempt, you can retake the exam after 14 days. After a second failed attempt, another 14-day wait applies. A maximum of 3 attempts is allowed within any 12-month period.
The certification is valid for 3 years, after which recertification is required.
AWS periodically updates exam versions. The current version as of 2026 is SAA-C03. Monitor the official exam page at aws.amazon.com/certification for any updates.
Your result appears immediately after completing the test — you will see “Pass” or “Fail” on screen. A detailed domain-level report is sent to your email within 5 business days.

SUMMARY
The SAA-C03 exam consists of 65 questions in 130 minutes, with a passing score of 720 out of 1000. Two question types: single correct answer and multiple correct answers. There is no penalty for wrong answers — answer every question. The most heavily weighted domain is security (30%). The exam can be taken online or at a Pearson VUE testing center. Understanding the exam format is already part of your preparation.
